We designed, engineered and shipped the entire product: brand, UX, full-stack platform and the AI categorisation engine at its heart.
The challenge
UK accountants spend a disproportionate amount of every client engagement manually categorising bank transactions — repetitive work that erodes margins and burns out junior staff.
Existing tools either lock practices into rigid bank-feed ecosystems or produce categorisations that don't map cleanly onto HMRC-recognised expense categories, forcing a second round of manual correction.
Practices needed something that fits how they actually receive client data: messy PDF bank statements and CSV exports from a dozen different banks — not pristine API feeds.
Our approach
We started with discovery sessions inside working accountancy practices, mapping the real journey from "client sends a statement" to "figures in the tax return".
We designed an AI categorisation pipeline with confidence scoring — high-confidence transactions are auto-filed, uncertain ones are queued for one-click human review, so accuracy compounds over time.
Every category in the system is aligned to HMRC's recognised expense categories, so the output drops straight into self-assessment and corporation tax workflows with no re-mapping.
We built robust PDF and CSV ingestion that handles the formatting quirks of major UK banks, plus client management so practices can run their whole book of clients in one place.
Excel export was treated as a first-class feature — accountants live in spreadsheets, so Reconova produces clean, working-paper-ready exports in one click.
